Contribute your own story, memory or message to this evolving participatory installation.
Inspired by personal histories, migration and acts of care, Love Letters brings together hundreds of handwritten contributions suspended within a vibrant sculptural display. As more messages are added throughout the festival, the artwork grows into a collective portrait of connection, revealing the many ways people express love, gratitude and belonging.
Artist statement:
Tapestry of Love is a participatory installation that explores love, memory and gestures that transcend language. The work features hand-rolled paper messages tied with gold wire and suspended like Chinese firecrackers, symbols of celebration, joy and protection.
Inspired by my Ah Mah, my Chinese grandmother who migrated to Australia, the work reflects on our bond across a language divide. Her love was expressed through food, especially Chinese love letter biscuits: delicate, rolled wafers that could never be read, only tasted.
Connecting this personal memory to Oxford Street’s layered histories of Chinese migrants living in the area, its market gardeners and vegetable hawkers who created connections with local families through exchanges and gift-giving, alongside its legacy of resilience, community and queer pride, Tapestry of Love celebrates the many ways the city has grown and love is expressed through gesture, care and connection when words are not enough.
