Inspired by the Brazilian tradition of fuxico, this participatory artwork brings together community members through creative exchange and shared storytelling. Video, installation and live making sessions combine to capture the humour, diversity and character of the Oxford Street precinct, celebrating the connections that emerge when people gather and share their experiences.
Artist statement:
Fuxico (Gossipings of Oxford Street and Beyond) is an interactive video installation celebrating the art of everyday storytelling through handcraft and conversation. Named after fuxico (pronounced foo-she-co), a traditional Brazilian fabric rosette whose name also means ‘to gossip’, the project brings people together across Oxford Street, Taylor Square and surrounding neighbourhoods. At its heart, the artwork is a collaborative effort: locals gather to stitch upcycled fabric flowers while trading neighbourhood tales, memories and rumours. Filmed in local cafés, shops and street corners, these shared moments form a video work capturing the humour, diversity and character of the area.
Join the artist and learn how to make a traditional Brazilian fuxico while sharing stories, conversation and connection with others on 24 October, 11am-12pm. In Brazilian Portuguese, fuxico means both a handmade fabric craft and gossip. So come along, make a fuxico and have a fuxico!
