About

The LEARNT (LEarning from Alcohol (Policy) Reforms in the NT) is a study focused on examining the impact of the reintroduction of the Banned Drinker Register (BDR) alongside the minimum unit price, PALIs (Police Auxiliary Licensing Inspectors) and other location specific alcohol restrictions.

The research approach involved:

  • time-series data from police, emergency departments, AOD treatment episodes, hospital re-admissions, child protection cases and a range of other sources, in-depth qualitative data from those who are/were on the BDR, their families/social networks.
  • a major data-linkage exercise to assess the ways in which people on the BDR interact with other government agencies (including justice, health, AOD treatment and other relevant agencies)
  • semi-structured interviews with a diverse range of key stakeholders.

This talk will provide findings focused on Darwin, answer questions and discuss policy options.

The talk will be presented by researchers from Deakin University, Menzies School of Health Research, AMSANT and Congress.

This event is focused on Darwin findings (although some broader findings for the whole of the NT will be presented). Subsequent events will be held for Katherine and Tennant Creek, as well as the whole of the NT. The report from which the findings are drawn can be found at: https://www.learntproject.com/publications
