Your Topic:
Australia was built as a penal colony on the idea that people could change. So how did we end up celebrating "tough on crime" politics instead? Today we imprison children, the number of women behind bars is growing faster than any other group, and incarceration has become a revolving door rather than a pathway to safety. This session explores how fear, politics and the social contract have shaped our justice system - from colonisation to today - and asks whether punishment has come at the expense of the very thing it promises: safer communities.
Your Speaker:
Tahlia Isaac is formerly incarcerated criminologist and is the founder of Project herself and author of She is Me. Tahlia’s work centres on advocating for womens rights in the justice system and is passionate about justice system redesign.
