The past, present and possible futures of sport on stolen lands.
This panel comes together to think about the meanings and possibilities of sport on stolen lands. Sport has been part of ceremonial practices for tens of thousands of years on this continent and surrounding islands, whilst invasion and colonisation have brought with them other sporting cultures, including the prioritisation of winning regardless of the costs. This panel will weave together the past, present, and possible futures of sport on stolen lands, asking:
- What might be learned from thinking of sport as ceremony?
- How have the cultures of the different Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander civilisations thought about and shaped sporting cultures?
- What have been the effects of the introduction – and at times imposition – of newer sporting cultures?
- What are the possibilities of sport being a place of truth-telling, healing, and justice?
