Rituals and Rebellions: Shaping Public Space Around Diverse Practices.

In 2021, a global audience watched in disbelief at live broadcasts of insurrectionists storming the United States Capitol Building. Later that year, the anti-lockdown protests at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance were livestreamed on social media platforms, prompting a national backlash. Why did these events occur at these sites and why did they occur so infrequently in the past?

The answers lie in the design and use of these places. The Capitol and Shrine had imposing neoclassical frontages which enabled the staging of ceremonial rituals, but they also possessed a quality common to all good public spaces— the capacity for reappropriation. Since the buildings or landscapes evolved around both types of practices, they became highly resilient to violence.
