Beyond the Wintergreen: Tales of Chinese Ceramics & Historical Archaeology

Archaeologists have found Chinese ceramics in a range of different archaeological sites across Victoria, from inner city family homes to rural townships. In this lecture, Heritage Victoria curator Annie Muir will look at different archaeological sites across Victoria, examine various Chinese ceramic artefacts that were found, and consider what we can learn about how people used them. The lecture will also briefly look at archaeological sites occupied by Chinese people across Australia, and internationally during the 19th and early 20th centuries, exploring similarities and differences.

Annie Muir has curated and managed archaeology collections for over 20 years. She is currently Heritage Curator at Heritage Victoria, where she works with a focus on interpretation and public outreach. She is passionate about exploring new and innovative ways to communicate the values of archaeology and collections to new audiences. Annie’s Masters thesis examined Chinese ceramics from archaeological sites in Melbourne, and she has published and curated exhibitions in this area.
