Explore Lux Sublimata, Melbourne artist Andrew Browne's new exhibition of photo-based imagery on satin banners.
Echoing unstretched paintings, these satin banners incorporate a compelling array of imagery based on manipulated photographic sources.
The overall effect is poetic. The soft, delicate satin shimmers and floats, and each image appears to shift. The word ‘lux,’ scientifically a unit of illuminance, is colloquially appropriated from the archaic term for light, underlining its vivid declamatory character as an image of heightened light effects.The process of sublimation – embedding imagery literally within the satin substrate via heat, gas and pressure – has alchemic as well as metaphoric resonances.
