About

Did you know Mt Victoria was Australia’s first village created for tourism? In the late Victorian era, Sydney’s travelled by steam train to breathe the crisp mountain air, then known as “Taking the Air!”

Join Mountains Tales for a relaxed two-hour walking tour where you too, can “Take the Air” and explore the historic and unexpected village of Mt Victoria.

Our tour begins with the arrival of the “Iron Horse” in 1868, when the steam train on the Western Line would soon open access to NSW. At over 1,000 metres, the “Top of the Mountain” became a favourite escape for Sydneysiders seeking fresh air and grand vistas.

Mt Victoria flourished through the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and on our tour, we’ll delve into the stories of holidaymakers and the locals who called the village home. We will finish in the heart of town, where you can enjoy lunch, browse unique shops, or keep exploring—just as visitors have for more than 150 years.

Tours are intimate, with a maximum of 15 guests, well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome—my two whippets give the tour a glowing five-paw review!

Our Village Walking Tours operate in “Mountains Weather,” please bring a hat, jacket or umbrella, based on the days offering.

If you have a gathering of family or friends, we invite small groups to join us for a private tour. Please contact Mountains Tales to coordinate.

Whether you’re a Blue Mountains local or a visitor to the Mountains; we promise you will enjoy an engaging, informative tour filled with great…
