Your Topic:
Who dances in Australia? Does the act of dancing mean more than physical movement? I present three vignettes about social dance of several different kinds in Australia, showing how dance can act in ways we may not expect: as a symbol of broader social change, an agent of political activism and an expression of cultural identity.
Your Speaker:
Dr. Jeanette Mollenhauer researches social dance practices, especially exploring the significance of traditional dance among immigrant communities in Australia. She has produced numerous academic publications, and has lectured in the UK, USA and Europe. She is also a recreational folk dance teacher and serves on the National Committee of Folk Dance Australia.
