Speakers will consider Melbourne's colonial foundations, the rise of organised reform movements, and the role of institutions such as The Salvation Army in responding to social need. The program also explores how reformers confronted industrialisation, urban growth and inequality, and reflects on the challenges facing Melbourne today.

Convened by Professor The Honourable Bill Shorten, Major Brendan Nottle and Professor Frank Bongiorno, this free one-day event offers an opportunity to learn from the past, engage with contemporary debates and consider how social reform can help shape Melbourne's future.
