Eating Food and Telling Stories: Singapore

Most of us don't realise how much Singaporean food has to tell. Every dish carries so much - Chinese immigration, formation of Peranakan culture, Indian trade, Malay cooking. At times these influences contradict each other - discovering stories behind each dish and connecting with others makes eating so much more enjoyable.

This is not a lecture or a food tour; it is a dinner where we’ll eat together and talk about why we eat what we eat. I’ll guide the evening, but veryone is invited to taste, react, ask questions, and share their own stories.

This time we'll go to the only place in Sydney that serves the authentic Peranakan food - Peranakan Place in Auburn. Most exciting part - we'll talk to the chef and the owner of the restaurant about his journey and the histories of his dishes. Many more fun things during the dinner - but the quality chats are the most important ones.

You don't need to know anything about Singaporean food. First time or grew up on it, the point is the same: good food, good company, and the stories behind the dishes. Coming alone is very welcome.

• Duration: Around 2 hours
• Cost: everyone pays for their own food and drinks, likely around $40-45 per person; 5 AUD ticket is the initial commitment - contributes to the final bill
