Thinking Without Thinking: Why Your Mind Is Already Made Up

Our mind’s greatest strength, automating our thinking, may also be one of its
greatest vulnerabilities.
Scientific findings suggest that on average, we are not aware of what we are thinking
or doing 48% of our waking day.

This public lecture explores the automaticity of human attention, the brain’s tendency
to shift from slow, effortful, deliberate thinking toward fast, efficient, automatic mental processes. While this allows us to function quickly in a complex world, it also creates
unconscious habits of attention and thinking that shape how we interpret ourselves, other people, and everyday experiences. Under stress, fatigue, or mental overload,
these automated patterns often dominate our behaviour in ways that may conflict
with our goals, values, and intentions.
