The 1820s and 1830s witnessed the height of bushranger activity in New South Wales. Many convicts absconded from their wealthy colonial masters, opting for a free life in the bush. Escaping was straightforward; surviving was anything but. By the end of the 1820s, Sydney’s western plains became the haunt of one John Donohoe. An Irish convict, a political prisoner, Donohoe soon attained folk hero allure because of his daring exploits, his gallantry to women and the poor and several improbable jail breaks. His spirit has lived on in Australian folklore through such ballads as ‘Bold’ Jack Donahue and the Wild Colonial Boy. This is his story
