Doreen’s Grassland: past, present and future

Join us to learn about Doreen’s Grassland, a special patch of remnant native grassland in Hobsons Bay and a reminder of the rich natural environment that once covered much of Melbourne’s west.

For the first part of the presentation, Susie Inglis from NatureWest will share the story of Doreen, a local resident whose childhood journal of pressed wildflowers has become an important record of the grasslands species that once grew in the area. Susie will talk about Doreen’s life, how the journal came into her care, and what it tells us about the biodiversity of these grasslands.

In the second part, Andrew Webster, Senior Conservation Ranger with Hobsons Bay City Council, will discuss the work being done to restore Doreen’s Grassland today. Learn about recent projects, including scalping and replanting, and how these efforts are helping native grassland plants return to the site.

We'll finish with an informal discussion about the future of Doreen’s Grassland, including opportunities to expand habitat connections and strengthen links with nearby grasslands such as Brimbank Park, helping create a more resilient network for native plants and wildlife.
